Vertigo

Vertigo is a condition where a person feels a spinning or dizzy sensation, often described as the world moving around them. It is not a disease itself but a symptom of an underlying problem — often related to the inner ear or vestibular system. Vertigo can interfere with daily life, increasing the risk of falls, nausea, and anxiety.

Common Symptoms:

  • Spinning sensation (even when stationary)

  • Loss of balance or unsteadiness

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)

  • Headache or sweating

  • Difficulty focusing or concentrating

  • Sudden eye movements (nystagmus)

Common Causes:

  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV): Small calcium particles dislodged in the inner ear

  • Vestibular Neuritis or Labyrinthitis: Viral infections affecting the inner ear nerves

  • Ménière’s Disease: A fluid imbalance in the inner ear causing episodes of vertigo, tinnitus, and hearing loss

  • Head trauma

  • Migraine-related vertigo

  • Acoustic neuroma or other inner ear tumors (rare)

Solution:
Our ENT specialists offer a detailed evaluation using hearing tests, balance assessments, and imaging (if needed) to determine the cause of vertigo. Treatment is personalized based on the diagnosis and severity.

Treatment Options Include:

  • Canalith Repositioning (Epley Maneuver): Effective for BPPV

  • Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT): Exercises to retrain the balance system

  • Medications: For inflammation, nausea, or motion sickness

  • Lifestyle Modifications: Managing stress, salt intake (in Ménière’s), and hydration

  • Surgical Options: Rarely needed but may be considered in chronic or severe cases

Benefits of Proper Diagnosis & Treatment:

  • Relief from dizziness and nausea

  • Restored balance and reduced risk of falls

  • Improved quality of life and confidence

  • Accurate identification of serious underlying conditions

  • Non-invasive and drug-free options available in many cases
