Thyroid

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck. It plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism, heart rate, and body temperature. Thyroid disorders can result in abnormal hormone production or the growth of nodules, enlargement (goiter), or even cancer, affecting your overall health and quality of life.

Common Thyroid Conditions:

  • Hypothyroidism: Underactive thyroid causing fatigue, weight gain, cold sensitivity, and depression

  • Hyperthyroidism: Overactive thyroid leading to weight loss, anxiety, palpitations, and tremors

  • Goiter: Enlargement of the thyroid gland, which may cause visible neck swelling or difficulty swallowing

  • Thyroid Nodules: Lumps that may be benign or cancerous

  • Thyroid Cancer: May present as a painless neck lump and needs urgent evaluation

Symptoms to Watch For:

  • Swelling at the front of the neck

  • Voice changes or hoarseness

  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing

  • Fatigue, mood changes, or weight fluctuations

  • Irregular heartbeat or menstrual changes

Causes & Risk Factors:

  • Iodine deficiency

  • Autoimmune diseases (e.g., Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Graves’ disease)

  • Family history of thyroid problems

  • Radiation exposure

  • Hormonal imbalances

Solution:
Thyroid treatment depends on the underlying cause. In cases of large goiters, suspicious nodules, or thyroid cancer, surgery may be recommended. Medical treatments like hormone replacement therapy or anti-thyroid medications are used for hormonal imbalances.

Surgical Options (Thyroidectomy):

  • Partial Thyroidectomy: Removal of one lobe of the thyroid

  • Total Thyroidectomy: Removal of the entire thyroid gland

  • Surgery is performed under general anesthesia

  • Often requires hormone replacement post-surgery

Benefits of Surgery & Expert Treatment:

  • Relief from pressure symptoms like difficulty swallowing or breathing

  • Removal of potentially cancerous nodules or tumors

  • Improved hormonal balance with appropriate follow-up treatment

  • Restoration of normal daily function and energy levels

  • Low-risk, high-precision procedure with fast recovery
